The Clothes Worn by a Book

The front and back covers of a book were called chaekeui, or the book’s clothes. Which clothes did our ancient books wear? The functions of a book cover are to protect, conceal, and beautify the inside. The book covers of Korea’s old books have their own beauty.
The covers are wrapped up with the paper of auspicious designs printed by a diamond-pattern woodblock that is engraved by a dexterous sculptor. Through this show I would like to present the beauty of Korea’s ancient book covers and their inside.
Korea’s ancient book covers: The book covers are made from jangji (thick traditional paper) with naturally-dyed hanji in its back. The patterns used are all printed by neunghwapan (a diamond-pattern woodblock).
